Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society officially became stewards of the Granfield Estate (Manley Farm) in 2010 thanks to a generous bequest from Cynthia Granfield. It is a 240 acre property on ALR land in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, comprising a variety of habitats and uses of land. Using the landscape approach, we continue to work hard maintaining the property according to our obligations stipulated in Mrs. Granfield’s will through collaborations with our local farming partners, community stakeholders and area residents.

The property provides a safe habitat for wildlife in the area. It currently supports deer, ducks, quail, heron, owls, osprey, eagles, bears, otters, muskrat, frogs, and many small bird species, just to name a few. It is even home to some listed and endangered species such as the northern red-legged frog and barn swallow.

NWPS works closely with farming partners to ensure environmentally sound agriculture practices are employed so that the sustainable farming and wildlife preservation wishes that Mrs. Granfield had envisioned for the property are realized.

In keeping with sanctuary best practices, NWPS will continue to keep the private property closed to the general public. We are working hard to ensure the wild spaces on the property are kept as safe habitat for local wildlife to use as feeding and nesting grounds. NWPS is continually developing opportunities for community members to become involved with and learn more about the Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary and regional wildlife in general. Thanks to the generous support of Environment Canada, Shell, Chevron, many individual supporters and BCIT Ecological Restoration program students Carlo Acuña and Anne Fisher, we have been fortunate to restore the 8 acre wetland on the property.
